Siliguri
The plains city where every hill journey begins

Siliguri is a busy trading city on the Mahananda river, at about 120 m, where the plains of north Bengal meet the first Himalayan foothills. It sits in the narrow Siliguri Corridor, the strip of Indian land between Nepal and Bangladesh that links the North East to the rest of the country. Almost everyone bound for Darjeeling, Gangtok, Kalimpong, the Dooars or Bhutan arrives here.
Let us be honest: most people should not stay. The city is hot and humid from April to September, traffic is heavy and the hills are only two to four hours away. If your train reaches New Jalpaiguri (NJP) or your flight lands at Bagdogra before about 2 pm, head straight up. If you arrive late or leave early, a night here is the sensible choice.
If you do stay, Siliguri has more than its reputation suggests. The Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary starts at Sukna, 13 km away. The large white stupa at Salugara is a calm stop on the Sevoke road. The Coronation Bridge over the Teesta is a short drive further. And the food, from Bengali fish thalis to Tibetan momos, is cheap and good.

Getting there
How to reach Siliguri
Bagdogra airport (IXB), about 14 km west of the city, has direct flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Guwahati and other cities. Prepaid taxis wait outside arrivals; a car into Siliguri costs about ₹500–800.
New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the main railway station, about 6 km south of the centre, with trains from Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati and beyond. Siliguri Junction, closer to the centre, handles fewer trains. Autos and taxis link NJP to the city in 20–30 minutes.
Jeeps from the hills arrive at the stands around the Tenzing Norgay Central Bus Terminus on Hill Cart Road. Sikkim-bound shared jeeps and SNT buses use the SNT bus stand and nearby stands on the same road.
Long-distance buses from Kolkata, Bihar, Assam and Nepal arrive at the Tenzing Norgay Central Bus Terminus. Overnight Volvo and sleeper buses from Kolkata take 10–12 hours.

Five things to know
- If you arrive after about 3 pm, stay in Siliguri rather than driving the hill roads in the dark and fog
- Use the prepaid taxi counters at NJP and Bagdogra; they are fair and save haggling
- Foreigners heading to Sikkim can get the Inner Line Permit at the Sikkim tourism office in Siliguri or at the Rangpo border; carry passport photos
- Withdraw cash in Siliguri, where ATMs are plentiful, before heading to Sandakphu or remote villages
- Siliguri traffic is slow from about 9 am to 8 pm; allow at least an hour from the city to Bagdogra for a flight
The local story
Where the hill railway began
Before 1878 the journey from Calcutta to Darjeeling took five or six days by train, river steamer, bullock cart and palanquin. That year Siliguri was joined to Calcutta by a metre-gauge railway, and the trip shrank to about two days. From Siliguri, horse-drawn tongas carried travellers up the Hill Cart Road.
Questions travellers ask
Questions about Siliguri
Is it worth staying in Siliguri?
Usually not for long. Siliguri is a transit city, hot and humid for much of the year, and the hills are two to four hours away. Stay a night only if your train or flight arrives late or you leave early. If you do, spend the spare hours at the Mahananda sanctuary, the Salugara stupa or the Coronation Bridge, and eat well.
How far is NJP from Siliguri city?
New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station is about 6 km south of central Siliguri, 20–30 minutes by auto or taxi depending on traffic. An auto to Hill Cart Road costs about ₹150–250, a taxi ₹300–500. Many shared jeeps to Darjeeling and Gangtok also wait right outside NJP, so you may not need to go into the city at all.
How far is Bagdogra airport from Siliguri?
Bagdogra airport is about 14 km west of Siliguri, around 30–45 minutes by car. Prepaid taxis into Siliguri cost about ₹500–800. From Bagdogra, Darjeeling is about 3 hours, Kurseong about 1.5 hours and Gangtok about 4–5 hours by reserved car. Leave plenty of time for city traffic when heading to the airport for a flight.
Where do shared jeeps to Darjeeling leave from in Siliguri?
Darjeeling, Kurseong and Mirik jeeps leave from the stand beside the Tenzing Norgay Central Bus Terminus on Hill Cart Road, near Siliguri Junction. Some Darjeeling jeeps also wait outside NJP station. Jeeps run from early morning to mid-afternoon and leave when full. Buy your seat at the counter or from the driver and note the vehicle number.
Where is the SNT bus stand in Siliguri?
The SNT (Sikkim Nationalised Transport) bus stand is on Hill Cart Road, a short walk from the Tenzing Norgay Central Bus Terminus. Buses and shared jeeps for Gangtok and other Sikkim towns leave from here and nearby stands. Foreigners need a Sikkim Inner Line Permit, which can be arranged in Siliguri or at the Rangpo border. Check current status before you travel.
What is there to do in Siliguri for a day?
Take a half-day drive to the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary at Sukna, the Salugara monastery stupa and the Coronation Bridge at Sevoke, with a stop at the Sevokeshwari Kali temple. In the evening, shop at Hong Kong Market and Bidhan Market and eat a Bengali thali or momos. A car for half a day costs about ₹1,500–2,500.
Is Siliguri safe for tourists?
Yes, Siliguri is generally safe, with the usual city cautions. Watch your bags at NJP and the bus terminus, where crowds are heavy, and use prepaid taxis or app cabs at night. Touts sometimes offer hotel or jeep deals at the station; book through known counters instead. Women travelling alone should prefer reputable hotels near main roads.
Can I see elephants near Siliguri?
Wild elephants live in the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary and the forests towards the Dooars and are sometimes seen from the Sevoke and Sukna roads, especially at dusk. Sightings are never guaranteed. For safaris, the Dooars parks such as Gorumara and Jaldapara, 2–4 hours away, are better organised. Never stop or step out of a car near wild elephants.
What is the best food to try in Siliguri?
Try a Bengali fish thali with rice, dal, vegetables and fish curry, kathi rolls, phuchka from street stalls and sweets such as rosogolla and sandesh. Tibetan and Nepali places near Hill Cart Road serve momos and thukpa. Prices are much lower than in Darjeeling, with a full thali at about ₹150–300 in a simple restaurant.
