The altitude ladder
From the tea plains near sea level to lakes above 5,000 m. Mountain sickness can start above about 2,500 m, so plan to climb in steps.
Sleep no more than about 500 m higher each night once you are above 3,000 m, and spend a night at a middle height (Gangtok, Lachung or Lachen) before a day trip to Nathu La, Zero Point or Gurudongmar. Drink water, skip alcohol on the first high nights and come down if a headache gets worse. This is general advice, not medical advice: ask a doctor before you travel if you have heart or lung conditions.
