Phuentsholing
Bhutan's front door on the Dooars plains

Phuentsholing sits where the last foothills drop to the plains, at about 300 m, on the bank of the Amo Chhu, the river India calls the Torsa. A painted gate separates it from Jaigaon in West Bengal. On one side are crowded Indian market lanes; on the other, traffic that stops for pedestrians, buildings with carved wooden windows, and clocks set 30 minutes ahead of IST.
For overland travellers this is where Bhutan formally begins. The regional immigration office near the gate issues entry permits for Indians, and buses, taxis and tour vehicles leave from here for Thimphu and Paro. It is also Bhutan's main commercial town, so expect trucks, wholesale shops and a working feel rather than postcard views.
The town is worth a few hours. The Zangtho Pelri Lhakhang in the centre, Kharbandi Goemba on the hill above, and the crocodile breeding centre by the river are all within a few kilometres. In summer it is hot and humid, often above 32°C, so walk in the morning or evening.

What Phuentsholing does best
The ornate gate between Jaigaon and Phuentsholing is the classic first photograph of an overland trip. Pedestrians walk through; vehicles use a separate lane.
A temple in the town centre representing Guru Rinpoche's celestial palace, with a small garden and prayer wheels where locals walk in the evening.
A monastery about 5 km up the Thimphu road, with views over the Dooars plains and the Torsa river.
A small centre by the river breeding gharials and mugger crocodiles, ten minutes from the gate.
Town restaurants serve chillies in cheese, red rice and momos at lower prices than Thimphu.

Five things to know
- Reach the immigration office early on a weekday; it closes on Saturday afternoons, Sundays and Bhutanese public holidays.
- Carry your original voter ID or passport, two photos, photocopies and a hotel booking for your first night in Bhutan.
- Set your watch 30 minutes ahead when you cross; bus departure times are in Bhutan Time.
- Change some money into small notes; ₹100 and ₹200 notes are accepted everywhere in town.
- Walk across the gate only with your permit if you plan to go beyond town; day visitors to the town itself have usually not needed one, but rules change. Check current status before you travel.
The local story
The road that opened Bhutan to the plains
Until the early 1960s there was no motor road into Bhutan. Traders and officials going from the Dooars plains to Paro or Thimphu walked or rode mules for several days, climbing through forest and over ridges on old mule tracks.
Questions travellers ask
Questions about Phuentsholing
Where do Indians get the Bhutan permit at Phuentsholing?
At the regional immigration office close to the Bhutan Gate. Indians can also apply online in advance through the Department of Immigration portal and collect or show the permit here. Bring your original passport or voter ID, photos, photocopies and a confirmed booking in a certified hotel. The office is closed on Sundays and public holidays. Check current status before you travel.
Can I visit Phuentsholing for a day without paying SDF?
Day visitors who stay within Phuentsholing town and return to Jaigaon the same day have generally been exempt from the SDF in recent years. Overnight stays and any travel beyond town require a permit and the full ₹1,200 per night fee. The border-town rules have been revised more than once, so check current status before you travel.
How far is Phuentsholing from Siliguri?
About 160 km. A reserved car takes about 4 hours via Sevoke, Birpara and Hasimara, and buses take 4–5 hours with stops. The road crosses the Teesta at Coronation Bridge and runs past tea gardens and the edge of Jaldapara. Leave early so you reach the immigration office before it closes.
Is it better to stay in Jaigaon or Phuentsholing?
Phuentsholing is cleaner, quieter and safer at night, but each night there costs ₹1,200 per person in SDF on top of the room. Jaigaon has cheaper hotels from about ₹1,000 and no SDF, but the streets are crowded and noisy. Budget travellers often sleep in Jaigaon, cross in the morning and leave for Thimphu after the permit is issued.
What is the time difference at the Bhutan border?
Bhutan Time is 30 minutes ahead of Indian Standard Time. When it is 9 am in Jaigaon it is 9.30 am in Phuentsholing. Office hours, bus departures and hotel check-out times in Bhutan all follow Bhutan Time, so adjust your watch as soon as you cross the gate.
Is Phuentsholing worth a night?
It is worth one night if you arrive late or want an easy afternoon. The Zangtho Pelri Lhakhang, Kharbandi Goemba and the crocodile centre fill three or four hours. If you get your permit by late morning you can go straight on to Thimphu and arrive by evening, which saves a night of SDF.
What is the weather like in Phuentsholing?
Hot and humid for much of the year. Summer days often reach 32–35°C, and the monsoon from June to September brings very heavy rain. November to February is pleasant at 12–25°C. Dress for heat even if you are carrying warm clothes for Thimphu and Paro, which are 2,000 m higher.
Can I take an Indian taxi from Phuentsholing to Thimphu?
Indian-registered vehicles need a separate vehicle permit and fee to enter Bhutan, and most Siliguri taxis do not go beyond the border. Travellers usually switch to a Bhutan-registered car with a driver, often booked with their guide, or take a public bus. Check current status before you travel.
Where can I eat in Phuentsholing?
Restaurants around the main market and near the gate serve Bhutanese, Indian and Tibetan food. Try ema datshi, kewa datshi with potatoes, and red rice for about ₹200–350 a plate. Momos and thukpa cost ₹100–200. Indian thalis are easy to find on both sides of the gate for those who prefer milder food.
