Kalimpong, Lava and Rishop with Neora Valley in five nights

Two nights in Kalimpong, two in Lava with a day walk into Neora Valley National Park, and a final night in Rishop for the Kanchenjunga sunrise. You return to the plains through Gorubathan, a forest road that also works when NH10 is blocked.

This trip climbs steadily: from Kalimpong at about 1,250 m to Lava at about 2,195 m, then to Rishop at about 2,590 m. Each stop is cooler and quieter than the last. The centre is a full day in Neora Valley National Park, one of the least disturbed forests in the Eastern Himalaya.

Neora Valley is closed from about mid-June to mid-September, so we run this route from late September to early June. The best months are October and November for clear views, and April and May for birds and rhododendrons.

Check current status before you travel.

Day05

Lava to Rishop on foot or by car

Overnight: Rishop11 km, 40 minutes, or a 4 km walkMeals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Morning prayers at the Lava monastery, then send your bags ahead by car and walk the forest trail of about 4 km up to Rishop with a local guide, about 2 hours uphill. Those who prefer can drive. Questions travellers ask

Good to know

When is the best time for this Lava and Neora Valley trip?

October and November give the clearest mountain views; April and May bring birds and rhododendrons. December to February is clear and cold, with occasional snow in Lava and Rishop. We do not run it from mid-June to mid-September, when Neora Valley National Park is closed and roads are at their worst.

How hard is the Neora Valley day?

Moderate. You walk 5–10 km on uneven forest trails at over 2,000 m, with steep and muddy stretches. The pace is slow because of birding stops. Anyone who can walk for several hours with breaks should manage. Wear proper walking shoes and carry rain gear and water.

Will I see a red panda?

Probably not. Red pandas live in Neora Valley but are shy and mostly in higher, remote forest. Day visitors rarely see one. The day is about the forest itself and the birds, and that is worth the trip. Treat any red panda sighting as a rare bonus.

What happens if Neora Valley is closed on my date?

The park can close at short notice for weather, fire risk or official reasons. If that happens, we replace the park walk with Changey Falls and Kolakham, or a guided birding walk on the forest roads around Lava. Permit and guide fees are paid locally, so you pay nothing for a closed park.

Can I skip the walk from Lava to Rishop?

Yes. The walk is optional. A car can take you the 11 km by road in about 40 minutes. The walk is about 4 km and 2 hours uphill through forest, with a local guide. If it is raining hard, we always take the car.

Is this trip suitable for children?

Yes, for children who enjoy walking and can cope with cold nights. The Neora Valley day may be long for under-eights; we can shorten it. Rooms in Lava and Rishop are simple. Carry warm clothes, snacks and basic medicines, since shops are few beyond Kalimpong.

Do I need permits?

No permit is needed for Kalimpong, Lava or Rishop. Neora Valley National Park needs an entry permit and a registered guide, which we help arrange at the Lava forest office. Fees are paid locally and change from time to time. Check current status before you travel.

Why do we return via Gorubathan?

The forest road from Lava down to Gorubathan and the Dooars is scenic and avoids doubling back through Kalimpong. It also stays open more often when landslides close NH10 along the Teesta in the wet months. If NH10 is clear and you prefer, we can return via Kalimpong instead.

Can I add Lolegaon to this trip?

Yes. Lolegaon is about 24 km from Lava. Add a night there between Kalimpong and Lava for the canopy walk and Jhandi Dara sunrise, making a six-night trip. Or see our seven-night route that includes Lolegaon, Lava, Sillery Gaon and Gangtok.
