A week that starts in Kalimpong, loops through the forest villages of Lolegaon, Lava and Sillery Gaon, then crosses into Sikkim via Rhenock for two nights in Gangtok. It shows the Kalimpong hills in depth and ends in Sikkim's capital.
This trip follows the old trade route out of Kalimpong. From the town you head into the forests of Lolegaon and Lava, then north through Algarah and Pedong to Sillery Gaon, on the track mule caravans once took towards Jelep La. From there you drop to Rhenock and cross into Sikkim for Gangtok.
Drives are mostly 1–3 hours, and each village gets a full night. The highest point is Lava at about 2,195 m, so altitude is not a concern. Foreign travellers need a Sikkim Inner Line Permit for the last two nights.

Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Why go from Sillery Gaon to Gangtok instead of back to Kalimpong?
Sillery Gaon is close to Rhenock in East Sikkim, so continuing to Gangtok avoids doubling back and lets you end in Sikkim's capital. The road follows part of the old trade route towards Jelep La. It also makes it easy to add Tsomgo Lake or the Old Silk Route if you extend the trip.
Do foreigners need a permit for this trip?
Kalimpong and its villages need no permit. Gangtok needs a Sikkim Inner Line Permit for foreigners, which can be applied for online or obtained at certain entry points such as Rangpo and Melli. Since this route enters via Rhenock, we arrange the permit in advance. Check current status before you travel.
Is this trip too much driving?
Most days have 1–3 hours of driving on slow hill roads, and two longer days of about 4 hours: Sillery Gaon to Gangtok and Gangtok to the plains. The pace leaves afternoons free in each village. Carry motion sickness tablets if you are prone to car sickness.
Can I include Neora Valley National Park?
Yes, if you travel between mid-September and mid-June. With a very early start from Lolegaon you can reach Lava for a short park visit, but it is rushed. Better to add a second night in Lava, making this an eight-night trip. Check current status before you travel.
Is the trip suitable for families?
Yes. The altitude stays below about 2,200 m, the canopy walk and village walks suit children, and Gangtok adds cafes and easy sights at the end. Rooms in the villages are simple and nights cool. Tell us children's ages so we can choose homestays with suitable rooms and food.
What is the best season for this route?
October and November give the clearest views; March to May brings flowers and birds with more haze; December to February is cold and often clear. We do not run it from mid-June to mid-September, when landslides and rain make the village roads slow and views are rare.
Can I do this route in reverse?
Yes. Start in Gangtok, cross to Sillery Gaon via Rhenock, then Lava, Lolegaon and Kalimpong, and drive down to Siliguri. Prices are the same. Starting in Gangtok gives foreign travellers a simpler permit entry at Rangpo, where the Inner Line Permit is routinely issued, and lets you end with Kalimpong's haat and cheese shops.
What kind of car is used?
In the Budget tier, shared jeeps where they run and local cars for village legs. In Value and Comfort, a private car or SUV with driver from Siliguri through the villages, then a Sikkim-registered car for Gangtok sightseeing, since local rules limit outside cars there. All drivers know the hill roads.
How much cash should I carry?
Plan for about ₹1,000–1,500 a day per person for snacks, tips, entry fees and small purchases, more if you add Neora Valley or Tsomgo Lake. Draw cash in Kalimpong before day three, since Lolegaon, Lava and Sillery Gaon have few or no ATMs and digital payments may fail when signal drops.
