Morgan House (WBTDC)

Morgan House stands in large grounds on Durpin Hill, about 3 km from the town centre and close to the Zang Dhok Palri monastery. After independence it passed to the government, and the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation has run it as a tourist lodge for decades. Locals will tell you it is haunted; most guests only meet creaky floors and cold corridors.
Rooms vary a lot. The best are the large rooms in the old house with views of the Kanchenjunga range; others are plain. Food is simple Indian and Chinese from the lodge kitchen. Book through the WBTDC website and check recent reviews, since upkeep has varied over the years.

Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Who built Morgan House in Kalimpong?
It was built in the 1930s by George Morgan, a British jute merchant, as a family house on Durpin Hill. After 1947 the property passed to the Government of India and later to the West Bengal government, and WBTDC runs it today as a tourist lodge. It is one of the best-known colonial buildings in Kalimpong.
Is Morgan House really haunted?
It has a long local reputation as a haunted house, and the story is often repeated in travel writing. We know of no evidence for it. What guests do report is a large, old building that feels cold and echoing at night, especially in winter. Ask for a room in the main house if you want the atmosphere.
How do I book Morgan House?
Book online through the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation website, or at WBTDC offices in Kolkata and Siliguri. Rooms in the old house sell out first in October, April and May. Rates are indicative at about ₹3,000–6,500 a room per night, and meals are paid separately at the lodge restaurant.
