A five-night loop of the three best-known hill towns of the Eastern Himalaya: two nights in Darjeeling for the toy train and tea, one in Kalimpong for its nurseries and monasteries, and two in Gangtok. It starts and ends at NJP or Bagdogra.
This loop links Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Gangtok, three towns on separate ridges divided by the Teesta valley. Each feels different: Darjeeling has the railway, the tea and the colonial centre; Kalimpong is a quieter market town of nurseries, schools and monasteries; Gangtok is the modern capital of Sikkim.
Distances are short but the roads drop to the Teesta and climb again, so each transfer takes 2.5–4 hours. We keep two nights at each end and one in the middle so there is time to see each place without rushing. Foreign travellers need a Sikkim Inner Line Permit for Gangtok, which we arrange.

Foreign nationals need a Sikkim Inner Line Permit for Gangtok, issued at Rangpo or arranged in advance; bring passport copies and photos.
National Highway 10 along the Teesta can close after heavy rain; we keep a backup route via Lava or Rhenock where possible. Check current status before you travel.
Shared jeeps between the three towns are reliable but leave early; Budget travellers should be at the stand by 8 am.
In Gangtok, private cars from outside Sikkim cannot do local sightseeing, so we switch to a Sikkim-registered car for days 5 and 6.
Spend less
How to do this route for less
Use shared jeeps between Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Gangtok; seats cost ₹200–400 each instead of ₹3,000–4,500 for a reserved car.
Travel in November or March for clear weather and lower hotel rates than October or May.
Skip the Gangtok ropeway and walk MG Marg and the Ridge instead.
Eat at local momo and thali places rather than hotel restaurants; meals cost half as much.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Is five nights enough for Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Gangtok?
Five nights covers the highlights of all three towns at a moderate pace, with two nights each in Darjeeling and Gangtok and one in Kalimpong. You will not have time for North Sikkim, Tsomgo Lake in a relaxed way or Sandakphu. With seven nights we would add Tsomgo and Nathu La from Gangtok or a night in Mirik.
Do Indians need a permit for Gangtok?
No. Indian citizens need no permit for Gangtok itself, only photo ID. Permits are needed for protected areas such as Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La and North Sikkim, arranged through registered agents. Foreign nationals need a Sikkim Inner Line Permit for Gangtok, issued at Rangpo or arranged in advance. Check current status before you travel.
How long is the drive from Darjeeling to Kalimpong?
About 50 km and 2.5–3 hours via Teesta Bazaar. The road drops from about 2,045 m to the river at around 200 m and climbs again to 1,250 m, with tea gardens and the Lovers' Meet viewpoint on the way. Shared jeeps run from Darjeeling's Chowk Bazar stand in the morning for about ₹200–300 a seat.
Can I do this trip in reverse?
Yes. Starting in Gangtok and ending in Darjeeling works just as well, and some travellers prefer finishing with the toy train. The total driving time is the same. In October and May, book Darjeeling hotels and the joy ride before you fix the direction, since those are the hardest to get.
Is this trip suitable for families?
Yes. Drives are 2.5–5 hours with stops, and each town has easy, child-friendly sights: the toy train and zoo in Darjeeling, nurseries and a cactus garden in Kalimpong, the ropeway and MG Marg in Gangtok. The Tiger Hill dawn start is optional. Choose the Value tier for a private car, which makes travel easier with children.
What is the best time for this circuit?
October to early December and March to May. Autumn gives the clearest mountain views; spring brings flowers and warmer days. Winter is cold but clear. Avoid the monsoon from June to September, when NH10 along the Teesta and the Darjeeling roads are prone to landslides, and views are poor.
Can I add Tsomgo Lake to this trip?
Yes, as a day trip from Gangtok on day 5 or with an extra night. Tsomgo Lake is about 38 km from Gangtok at about 3,750 m, and needs a permit arranged through a registered agent plus a Sikkim-registered vehicle. Roads close after snow. The add-on costs about ₹1,500–3,000 per person in a shared vehicle. Check current status before you travel.
What does the Value tier include?
From about ₹32,000 per person, twin sharing: five nights in good mid-range hotels with views, breakfast and dinner, a private car with driver for all transfers and sightseeing, a Sikkim-registered car for Gangtok, and a toy train joy ride. Entry fees, lunches, permits for protected areas and tips are extra. Prices are indicative for 2025–26.
How do I get back to NJP from Gangtok?
By private car it takes about 4–5 hours via Rangpo, Melli and Sevoke on National Highway 10. Shared jeeps and SNT buses also run to Siliguri. Leave by 8 am for afternoon trains or flights. The highway can slow or close after heavy rain or road works, so keep a buffer. Check current status before you travel.
