Windamere Hotel

The Windamere sits on Observatory Hill above the Mall, with cottages and rooms spread around old gardens. Rooms have fireplaces or heaters, hot-water bottles appear in the beds at night, and high tea is served in the afternoon. It is quiet, a little old-fashioned on purpose, and very central.
Prices usually include some meals, and the hotel is popular with couples and returning guests, so October and April to May fill early. It is the obvious Comfort-tier choice for travellers who want history and a walkable location over modern design.
Why we book it
- Real colonial history, from 1841 on Observatory Hill
- A two-minute walk to Chowrasta and Mall Road
- Fireplaces, warm beds and a quiet garden setting
- Afternoon tea in the old lounges
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Is the Windamere Hotel worth the price?
If you value history, location and service, it is. You walk to Chowrasta in minutes, the rooms have fireplaces or heaters, and meals are often included in the rate. Rooms are older in style than modern hotels, so if you want contemporary bathrooms and gym facilities, a newer hotel may suit you better at a similar price.
Can cars reach the Windamere Hotel?
Vehicle access to the Mall and Observatory Hill is restricted. Cars usually drop guests at the nearest permitted point and hotel staff help with luggage for the short walk. Tell the hotel your arrival time in advance so someone meets you. This restriction is also what keeps the area around the hotel quiet in the evenings.
When should I book the Windamere?
Book two to three months ahead for October, November, late March to May and the Christmas to New Year week. These are the clear-weather and holiday peaks, and the hotel has a limited number of rooms. Winter from December to February is quieter and cheaper, with the clearest mountain views, but nights are cold.
