Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How far is Namchi from NJP
Namchi is about 100–105 km from NJP station and about 110 km from Bagdogra airport, 3.5–4 hours by road. A reserved small car costs about ₹3,800–4,800, and an SUV about ₹4,800–6,000. It is the closest major Sikkim town to the plains apart from Rangpo and Melli on the border.
Are there buses from Siliguri to Namchi
Sikkim Nationalised Transport (SNT) has run buses between Siliguri and Namchi, but timings vary and services are fewer than shared jeeps. For most travellers a shared jeep is quicker and more frequent. Ask at the SNT counter in Siliguri for the current schedule and fare, and check current status before you travel.
Can I do Namchi as a day trip from Siliguri
It is possible but tiring: about 7–8 hours of driving for a few hours in Namchi. A reserved car for the day costs around ₹5,500–7,000. It is better to stay one night in Namchi, see the sights calmly, and continue into Sikkim or return the next day.
Is the Teesta valley road open in the monsoon
The road along the Teesta between Sevoke and Rangpo (NH10) is often hit by landslides and has been badly damaged in some years, including after the October 2023 flood. Traffic may be diverted via Lava or Gorubathan, adding hours. Check current status before you travel and allow a spare day from June to October.
