Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Is Mirik worth visiting?
Mirik is calm, green and much less crowded than Darjeeling, with Sumendu Lake, Bokar Monastery, tea gardens and orange orchards. It does not have Darjeeling's grand views or heritage, so one night is enough for most people. It is best as a first or last stop on a loop between Siliguri and Darjeeling, or for families wanting a quiet break.
Can I visit Mirik as a day trip from Darjeeling?
Yes. Mirik is about 49 km and 2 hours from Darjeeling via Sukhiapokhri. Day tours by reserved car cost around ₹3,000–4,000 and usually include the lake, Bokar Monastery, a tea garden stop and sometimes the Pashupati border market. Return the same way or drop down to Siliguri at the end of the day.
What is the Dudhia stop on the Mirik road?
Dudhia is a riverside spot where the Mirik road crosses the Balason river, about an hour from Siliguri. Families picnic on the stony banks and roadside stalls sell snacks. In the monsoon the river is high and swimming is dangerous. It is a pleasant tea break on a drive to Mirik, not a destination in itself.
Do shared jeeps run from Mirik to Darjeeling?
Yes, a few shared jeeps run daily between Mirik and Darjeeling, mostly in the morning, at around ₹150–200 a seat. They take about 2–2.5 hours via Sukhiapokhri and Ghum. There are fewer than on the Siliguri routes, so ask at the Mirik Bazar or Krishnanagar stand the evening before and get there early to secure a seat.
