Lachung village homestays

Family-run rooms in the older part of Lachung, across the river from the main road. Simple, warm hospitality and home-cooked meals at the lowest price in the valley.

Several Lachung families let two to four rooms in their wooden or concrete homes, mostly on the quieter side of the river. Rooms have thick quilts, basic furniture and either an attached bathroom or one shared with another room. Hot water comes from a geyser or a bucket, and power cuts are common.

Meals are eaten with the family or in a small dining room: rice, dal, vegetables, eggs or chicken, and thukpa or momo on request. Your operator can book a homestay instead of a hotel on any Lachung package, often at a small saving. Ask about heaters in winter.

Why we book it

  1. Cheapest decent beds in Lachung, usually with all meals
  2. Money goes straight to village families
  3. Quieter than the hotel strip on the highway
  4. Hosts can explain the Dzumsa, the monastery and village life

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Can I book a Lachung homestay without a tour operator?

You can contact a homestay directly, but you still need a registered operator for the permit and vehicle. Most people ask their operator to book the homestay as part of the package. Tell them early, as homestays have few rooms.

Are Lachung homestays warm enough in winter?

Rooms are cold from November to March. Thick quilts are standard, and some homes have electric blankets or a heater for an extra charge. Bring thermals and confirm what heating is available before you book. A hot water bottle and woollen socks make nights much easier.

Do homestays serve vegetarian food?

Yes. Simple vegetarian meals of rice, dal and seasonal vegetables are always possible. Jain or vegan food needs advance notice. Meat dishes such as chicken or pork are cooked on request. Tell your operator about diet needs when booking so the host can buy supplies, as shops in Lachung are small.
