Lepcha homestays in Dzongu

Family homestays in Lepcha villages such as Lingthem, Passingdang and Hee Gyathang. The main way to stay in the reserve, and one of the most rewarding stays in Sikkim.

Dzongu has no hotels. Instead, a number of Lepcha families run homestays with a few clean, simple rooms, many with attached bathrooms. Meals are home-cooked from the family farm, and hosts arrange guides, walks and the Dzongu permit.

Rates usually include all meals. Prices are per person rather than per room. Book a few weeks ahead and send ID copies early so the host can arrange your entry papers.

Why we book it

  1. The only way to stay inside the Lepcha reserve
  2. Hosts arrange the Dzongu permit and local guides
  3. Home-cooked Lepcha food
  4. Low altitude and quiet, a good pause between high valleys

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

How do I book a Dzongu homestay?

Contact a homestay by phone or message, or ask a Gangtok operator who works with Dzongu hosts. Share ID copies so the host can arrange the permit. Confirm pickup from Mangan and the total price including meals. Book a few weeks ahead for October to December.

Are Dzongu homestays comfortable?

They are simple but clean, with good bedding and usually attached bathrooms. Do not expect hotel features. Some have geysers, others bucket hot water. Power cuts happen, so carry a torch. Most hosts keep rooms very clean and serve generous meals.

Is the price per room or per person?

Most Dzongu homestays quote per person per night, including all meals. Children usually pay less. Guides and vehicles are extra. Ask for the full price in writing before you travel. Prices may also rise slightly in the October to December peak.
