Village and farm walk in Lachen

Lachen's lanes run between old wooden houses, newer concrete homes, fenced fields and storehouses. In autumn you may see potatoes and radishes being dug and dried. Yak cheese, called chhurpi, and dried meat hang in some kitchens.
Walk quietly and ask before photographing people or houses. Homestay hosts can explain how the village Dzumsa works and how families split time between the village and summer pastures.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Is it okay to walk around Lachen on my own?
Yes. The village is small and safe. Keep to lanes, close gates behind you and do not enter fields. Greet people and ask before taking photographs of them or their homes. Dogs in the village are usually calm, but keep a respectful distance.
Can I buy local products in Lachen?
Sometimes. Hard yak cheese, chhurpi, and woollen items may be for sale through your host. Supplies vary with the season. Pay in cash. Ask your host, who will usually know which families have chhurpi, wool or other goods to sell that season.
What is the best season for the walk?
May and October, when fields are active and the weather is mild. In winter the village is quiet and cold, and many families move down to lower areas. Spring brings blossom and green fields, while autumn has harvests and clear skies. Wear warm layers for late afternoon.
