Thangu and Chopta valley above Lachen
About 30 km north of Lachen, Thangu is a small settlement and army post on a high meadow, where Gurudongmar vehicles stop for tea and breakfast. Nearby, Chopta valley is a wide glacial valley with a river that freezes in winter and alpine flowers after the snow melts.
Chopta is not always open to tourists and may need an extra permit or vehicle charge, depending on army and district rules. Ask your operator when you book. Even a short stop at Thangu helps break the climb and gives your body time before going higher.

How high is Thangu?
Thangu is at roughly 3,900 m. It is a good stop for tea and a short walk, letting your body adjust a little before the climb to Gurudongmar at about 5,430 m. Walk slowly there and drink water, even if you feel fine, as the climb from Lachen is steep.
Can I stay overnight in Thangu?
Tourist stays at Thangu have been limited and are not normally part of packages. Most travellers sleep in Lachen. If your operator offers a Thangu night, check permits and facilities carefully. Sleeping lower in Lachen is also kinder to your body before the climb to Gurudongmar.
