The 4 am start for Gurudongmar from Lachen
Vehicles usually leave Lachen between 3:30 and 4:30 am, reaching Thangu for tea around dawn and the lake by about 7–8 am. Army checkposts on the way check your permit. After 30–45 minutes at the lake you drive back to Lachen for a late breakfast or lunch.
Pack the night before: warm layers, gloves, cap, sunglasses, water, snacks and any medicines. Many drivers carry a small oxygen cylinder; ask. If anyone in your group feels very unwell at Thangu, they should stay or turn back rather than push on.

Why do Gurudongmar trips start so early?
The wind at the lake strengthens after about 10 am and clouds often build by midday. The army also limits the hours when tourists can be on the road. Early starts give you the clearest view and the safest drive.
What if someone feels unwell on the way?
Stop at Thangu. If headache, nausea or dizziness is getting worse, that person should not go higher. Descending is the main treatment for altitude sickness. Drivers deal with this regularly and will help. Agree on this plan with your group before you leave Lachen.
Is breakfast available on the way?
Tea stalls at Thangu sell tea, noodles and simple snacks in season. Hotels in Lachen often give a packed breakfast. Eat lightly and drink water. Avoid heavy, oily food and alcohol before the climb, and carry water and a few biscuits in your day bag.
