Afternoon at Lachen Monastery

From the village, a lane climbs to the monastery on the ridge in about 20–30 minutes. The courtyard has prayer wheels and a view down the valley. The main hall, when open, holds statues and paintings of Guru Rinpoche and other figures.
Walk clockwise around the building and prayer wheels, take off your shoes in the hall and ask before taking photographs inside. A small offering is customary. Go slowly on the climb: even at 2,750 m it can leave you breathless on the first day.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
When was Lachen Monastery built?
It was established in 1858 and belongs to the Nyingma school. It has been renovated since, and the village takes part in its upkeep. It is the main religious centre for the people of Lachen. Visitors are welcome in the courtyard during daylight hours.
Can I visit on a one-night trip?
Only if you reach Lachen with daylight to spare, which is rare on the long drive from Gangtok. On the return from Gurudongmar you may have a little time after breakfast. A second night makes the visit easy. Even a short look at the courtyard is worth it.
Is there an entry fee?
No. Donations are welcome in the box. If a caretaker opens the hall for you, a small offering of ₹50–100 is a polite way to say thank you. Dress modestly, walk clockwise and remove your shoes before entering the hall. Ask before taking any photographs inside.
