Paro valley farmhouse homestays

Certified farmhouse homestays in Paro valley villages such as Shaba, Satsam and Tsento give the cheapest legal stay in Paro and a close look at farm life. Rooms are simple, meals are home-cooked and a hot stone bath is usually on offer.

Paro's villages are full of large, traditional farmhouses with painted windows and an altar room upstairs. A number of families are registered with the Department of Tourism to host visitors, which is required for any tourist stay in Bhutan. You sleep in a clean room with thick quilts, share meals with the family and often help in the kitchen.

We book farmhouses that have hot water, an attached or private bathroom and a host who speaks English or Hindi. They sit 5–15 km from Paro town, close to the Taktsang trailhead or Kyichu Lhakhang, so you still need a car. Expect red rice, ema datshi, buckwheat pancakes and local vegetables; ara, the farm spirit, is offered but never expected.

Why we book it

  1. The lowest certified price in Paro, with dinner and breakfast included
  2. A real farm family, not a hotel dressed up as one
  3. Hot stone baths after the Taktsang walk
  4. Quiet villages close to Taktsang and Kyichu Lhakhang

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Are Paro farmhouse homestays allowed for tourists?

Yes, if they are registered and certified by Bhutan's Department of Tourism. Tourists may stay only in certified accommodation, and your booking is checked during the permit process. We book only registered farmhouses. Do not arrange a stay with an uncertified family, as it can cause permit problems. Check current status before you travel.

What facilities do Paro farmhouses have?

Simple but clean rooms with quilts, usually an attached or private bathroom with hot water, and meals with the family. Wi-Fi may be weak and room heating limited, so winter nights are cold. Bring slippers, a torch and warm layers. Hosts can arrange a hot stone bath for an extra charge.

Is a farmhouse cheaper than a hotel in Paro?

Usually. A farmhouse with dinner and breakfast costs about ₹2,500–4,500 per person, while a three-star hotel room costs ₹6,000–9,000 before meals. The SDF of ₹1,200 per person per night applies either way. For families, a farmhouse often works out cheaper per head.
