The hotel sits about 3 km above Paro town among blue pines, with a main building and cottages in traditional style spread across the grounds. It was built to host foreign guests at the coronation of the fourth king in 1974 and has been receiving visitors ever since.

Rooms are comfortable rather than modern, with heating, wooden furnishings and, in many, views over the valley towards Rinpung Dzong. The quiet setting suits travellers who want rest before or after the Taktsang walk. You will need a car to reach town and the trailhead.

Why we book it

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

How far is Hotel Olathang from Paro town?

About 3 km uphill, 10 minutes by car. Rinpung Dzong and the National Museum are close by, while the Taktsang trailhead is about 15 km away, roughly 30 minutes' drive. Walking into town is possible downhill, but most guests use their car or a taxi.

Is Hotel Olathang historic?

Yes. It is one of the oldest hotels in Bhutan, built in the 1970s to house foreign guests attending the coronation of the fourth king in 1974. It has kept its traditional design, with a main building and cottages set in pine forest above the valley.

Are Hotel Olathang's rooms modern?

Rooms are comfortable and heated but traditional rather than modern, with wooden furnishings. Some guests find the style charming; others prefer newer hotels. Ask for a cottage or valley-view room when booking, and check current room types and rates. The grounds and views are the main reason to stay.
