Dewachen Hotel, Gangtey

The hotel is built in traditional style with thick stone walls, wooden floors and large windows facing the valley. Rooms have wood-burning stoves or heaters, which matter on winter nights when the temperature falls well below zero. The dining room serves Bhutanese and continental meals.
It sits a short drive from Gangtey Goenpa and the crane information centre, and the nature trail starts close by. In crane season it fills early, so book well ahead for late October to mid-November and around the 11 November festival.
Why we book it
- Warm rooms with stoves in a cold valley
- Views across the crane roosting marsh
- Close to Gangtey Goenpa and the nature trail
- Comfort without the cost of the luxury lodges
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Can I see cranes from Dewachen Hotel?
The hotel overlooks the valley, and in crane season you can often see and hear the birds in the marsh below, especially at dawn and dusk. For closer views use binoculars or visit the crane information centre a short drive away. The cranes are present from late October to February.
Is Dewachen warm in winter?
Rooms have wood-burning stoves or heaters, and staff light them in the evening. Phobjikha nights fall to about -5°C in mid-winter, so the stoves make a real difference. Bring warm layers for walking around the valley in the early morning.
How far ahead should I book Dewachen?
For late October to mid-November and the 11 November Crane Festival, book two to three months ahead. In other seasons a few weeks is usually enough. Your tour operator must include the booking with your route permit application. Check current rates before you travel.
