Santalabari, Buxa and Lepchakha homestays

Simple family homestays in the villages on the walk to Buxa Fort, run mostly by Drukpa and Nepali-speaking families. Basic rooms, home food and forest all round.

Several families in Santalabari at the start of the Buxa Fort path, and in Buxa village and Lepchakha above it, offer rooms to walkers. Expect a clean bed, shared or simple attached bathrooms, solar or erratic power, and three home-cooked meals of rice, dal, vegetables and sometimes chicken or eggs.

These villages lie inside Buxa Tiger Reserve, and rules on homestays here have tightened in recent years, with some closed after court and forest department orders. Ask the guide counter at Santalabari or your Alipurduar driver which homestays are currently allowed. Check current status before you travel.

Why we book it

  1. Sleep up by the fort and see Lepchakha at sunrise
  2. Money goes straight to village families
  3. Home food and local guides
  4. The cheapest way to stay in Buxa

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Do I need to book Buxa homestays in advance?

In the winter season and on long weekends, yes. Phone ahead through your driver, a local contact or the trek guide counter at Santalabari. Outside peak dates you can often find a room on arrival, but which homestays are allowed to operate changes with forest rules. Check current status before you travel.

What do Buxa homestays cost?

Expect roughly ₹1,200–2,000 per person per night, including dinner, breakfast and often lunch. Porters to carry bags up from Santalabari cost extra, and the local guide fee is paid separately. Prices are indicative and rise at peak times. Carry cash, as there are no ATMs or card machines in the villages.

Is there electricity and mobile signal at Buxa?

Power is limited and often solar, so charge devices when you can and carry a power bank and torch. Mobile signal is patchy around the fort and Lepchakha; one or two networks work at points along the path. Tell someone your plans before you walk up.
