Planning a Dooars trip: routes, nights and budgets

By Go Sikkim Tours Desk

Most travellers need three to six nights in the Dooars, starting from Siliguri. Spend two nights each at Gorumara and Jaldapara for rhinos, add Samsing for tea hills and Chilapata or Buxa for forest and walking, and travel between October and May.

What the Dooars is, and how it fits together

The Dooars is the strip of low country between the Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Bhutan hills and the Bengal plains, mostly in Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts. Think of it as a line about 150 km long running west to east from the Teesta river to the Sankosh, with the main road and the Dooars railway running along it.

Along that line sit the places travellers use. At the western end, Samsing is a tea village on the hill edge above Chalsa. Just below it are Lataguri and Murti, the bases for Gorumara National Park. In the middle, Madarihat is the gateway to Jaldapara National Park. Further east, Hasimara leads to Chilapata forest and the Bhutan border at Jaigaon and Phuentsholing, and Alipurduar and Rajabhatkhawa lead to Buxa Tiger Reserve.

Because the line is short, you rarely drive more than two hours between bases. The time goes on safaris, which happen at fixed hours, so plan around safari slots rather than distances.

How many nights you need

Two nights gives you a taste: one night at Samsing and one at Lataguri, or two at Lataguri with two Gorumara watchtower safaris. It suits a weekend from Siliguri or Kolkata.

Four nights is the classic first trip: two at Gorumara and two at Jaldapara, with three or four safaris and time for Totopara and the tea gardens. Most travellers who come for rhinos are happiest with this.

Six nights lets you cross the whole Dooars, adding Samsing at the start and Chilapata and Buxa at the end. This suits travellers who enjoy walking and simple forest stays as well as safaris. Anything longer is best spent adding Bhutan, Kalimpong or Darjeeling to the trip rather than more nights on the plains.

  • 2 nights: Samsing and Gorumara, or Gorumara only
  • 3 nights: Gorumara 1, Jaldapara 2
  • 4 nights: Gorumara 2, Jaldapara 2
  • 6 nights: Samsing, Gorumara, Jaldapara, Chilapata, Buxa 2

Distances and drive times

Siliguri, New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station and Bagdogra airport are the usual starting points. Everything below is by car on the Dooars road via Sevoke and the Coronation Bridge, with indicative times in normal traffic. Allow extra time on Puja holidays and market days, and never plan to drive the forest stretches after dark.

Getting around: car, bus or train

A private car with driver is the easiest way to travel. Expect roughly ₹3,500–4,500 a day for a hatchback or sedan and a little more for an SUV, plus the driver's food and stay. A car lets you reach dawn safaris on time and stop at tea gardens on the way.

Buses are the cheapest option. North Bengal State Transport and private buses leave the Tenzing Norgay bus terminus in Siliguri through the day for Malbazar, Birpara, Hasimara, Jaigaon and Alipurduar. Fares are roughly ₹100–250. Use autos, totos and local jeeps for the last few kilometres, for example from Malbazar to Lataguri or from Chalsa to Samsing.

The single-line Dooars railway runs from Siliguri Junction and NJP to Alipurduar, with stops at New Mal Junction for Lataguri, Chalsa for Samsing, Madarihat and Hasimara. Trains are few and slow but scenic, and very cheap. Check timings before you plan around them. Alipurduar Junction is a good place to end a trip if you are heading back to Kolkata.

What it costs per day

The Dooars is one of the cheaper parts of the Eastern Himalaya. Forest corporation lodges and village homestays cost much less than hill-station hotels, and safaris shared between six people are good value. The ranges below are per person per day, sharing a room, and are indicative for 2025–26.

Safaris are the item that varies most. A jeep costs the same whether it carries two people or six, so a couple taking two safaris a day in a private jeep can spend as much on safaris as on rooms. Sharing jeeps with other guests, choosing one safari a day instead of two, and booking forest corporation lodges directly on the official sites are the three easiest ways to keep the cost down. Prices for rooms and cars rise sharply over Durga Puja, Christmas and New Year, sometimes by half again, and fall in late April and May, when lodges offer discounts to fill rooms before the parks close for the monsoon.

  • Budget, ₹1,800–2,800: homestay or forest lodge with meals, buses and autos, a share of one jeep safari
  • Value, ₹3,500–5,500: good lodge or resort, private car shared by two, all meals and one safari a day
  • Comfort, ₹7,000–11,000: the best resort on the route, private SUV, private safari jeeps and an extra excursion

Where to base yourself

For Gorumara, Lataguri is the most convenient, with the safari counter and the widest choice of lodges and resorts. Murti, 15 km away, is quieter, with the WBFDC Banani lodge on the river. Chalsa, on the hill above, has Sinclairs Retreat Dooars, the most comfortable resort in the area.

For Jaldapara, stay at Madarihat, where the WBTDC Jaldapara Tourist Lodge sits near the gate. The old Hollong lodge inside the park was destroyed by fire in June 2024. For Chilapata, the WBFDC Mendabari Jungle Lodge and village cottages at Kodalbasti are the forest options; Hasimara has more hotels.

For Buxa, the most memorable stays are homestays in Buxa village and Lepchakha above the fort, but rules on homestays inside the reserve have changed several times, so check current status before you travel. Jayanti, Rajabhatkhawa and Alipurduar are the alternatives. For Samsing, choose between the forest corporation cottages at Suntalekhola and village homestays.

Seasons and the monsoon closure

The single most important date is 16 June. From then until 15 September every national park and wildlife sanctuary in North Bengal is closed. Plan wildlife trips between mid-September and mid-June, and ideally between November and April.

October is green and fresh but crowded with Puja holidays, and the grass is tall. November to February is dry and comfortable, with cold, foggy mornings in December and January. March and April are warmer, with good sightings near water. May is hot and humid. Samsing, at about 900 m, is a pleasant escape from the heat in April and May.

Mistakes to avoid

Many first-time visitors try to do too much in too little time, or arrive without safari bookings at a busy time. A few simple habits make the trip much better.

  • Do not plan a wildlife trip between 16 June and 15 September
  • Do not count on finding safari slots on arrival during Puja, Christmas or New Year
  • Do not drive the forest roads after dark; elephants cross often
  • Do not try both Gorumara and Jaldapara in a single day unless you have to
  • Do not walk into forests or tea gardens at dusk
  • Do not photograph people in villages such as Totopara without asking
  • Carry enough cash for remote stays at Buxa, Chilapata and Samsing

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

What is the best Dooars itinerary for first-timers?

Four nights from Siliguri: two at Lataguri for Gorumara and two at Madarihat for Jaldapara. Take a safari each afternoon and dawn, visit Totopara or a tea estate, and walk by the Murti river. It gives good chances of rhinos and elephants without long drives.

Can I do the Dooars as a day trip from Siliguri?

Only just. Lataguri is about 2–2.5 hours each way, so you could take one Gorumara watchtower safari and return the same day, but you would miss the best dawn slot. One night at Lataguri makes the trip far more worthwhile.

What is the cheapest way to see the Dooars?

Use buses from Siliguri along the Dooars road, autos for the last stretch, forest corporation lodges or homestays, and share safari jeeps with other guests. A budget of about ₹1,800–2,800 per person per day covers a basic trip. Travel midweek outside holidays for the best rates.

Should I go to Gorumara or Jaldapara if I only have two days?

If rhinos are the main aim, go to Jaldapara, which has the largest population in West Bengal. If you want the closest and easiest trip from Siliguri, or prefer watchtower waits, go to Gorumara. With two nights, Gorumara also lets you add Samsing.

Can I combine the Dooars with Darjeeling or Sikkim?

Yes. The Dooars sits between Siliguri and Bhutan, so many travellers do Darjeeling or Gangtok first, return to Siliguri and then spend three or four nights in the Dooars before flying out of Bagdogra. Kalimpong and Lava connect easily with Samsing and Gorumara.

Can I combine the Dooars with Bhutan?

Yes. Jaldapara and Chilapata are about 25–35 km from Jaigaon and the Bhutan border town of Phuentsholing. Indians need a passport or voter ID and pay Bhutan's Sustainable Development Fee; foreigners need a Bhutan visa arranged in advance. Check current status before you travel.

Is the Dooars good for a family holiday?

Yes. Distances are short, safaris last about two hours, and lodges and resorts are used to families. Children usually enjoy the watchtowers, the Medla bullock cart and spotting rhinos. Choose resorts with gardens or a pool, and avoid long walks with very young children.

Do I need a guide for the whole Dooars trip?

No. Every safari includes a forest guide, and village walks and the Buxa Fort path have local guides you hire on the spot. A good driver who knows the area is the most useful person on the trip, especially for booking counters and knowing where elephants cross.

When is the cheapest time to visit the Dooars?

Late April, May and early June, before the parks close on 16 June, are quietest and cheapest, though hot and humid. Mid-January to February outside long weekends is a good balance of price, weather and wildlife. Avoid Durga Puja week and the last week of December for prices.
