A winter snow stay in Lachung

From late December to February Lachung often gets snow in the village itself, with frozen streams and white slopes all the way to Zero Point.

Winter is the quietest time in Lachung outside the Christmas and New Year rush. Snow can fall on the village roofs, and Yumthang and Zero Point lie under deep snow. Mornings are clear and very cold, often below -5°C. The road above Lachung can close after heavy snowfall, so the trip is weather dependent.

Book a room with a heater, carry proper thermals, waterproof boots and gloves, and keep one spare day. Snow chains and four-wheel-drive vehicles are common in winter. Take the cold seriously: children and older travellers should stay warm and hydrated, and avoid long periods outside at Zero Point.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Is it guaranteed to snow in Lachung in winter?

No. Snow in the village depends on the year; some winters bring several falls, others only frost. Snow is far more reliable at Zero Point from November to April and often at Yumthang from December to March. Keep plans flexible.

Are roads open to Lachung in winter?

Usually, yes, though heavy snow can close the road above Lachung for a day or more, and occasionally below it. Operators then wait or change the plan. Keep a spare day before your onward flight or train. Check current status before you travel.

How cold is Lachung in January?

Daytime temperatures are around 5–8°C, and nights fall to about -5°C or lower. Wind at Yumthang and Zero Point makes it feel colder. Rooms are often unheated, so electric blankets and heaters matter. Carry thermals, a down jacket and woollen socks.
