Old village and orchard walk in Lachung

Most hotels sit along the highway, but the older village lies across the Lachung river on the far bank. Here are wooden houses with carved windows, stacks of firewood, prayer flags, small vegetable plots and apple and peach trees that flower in April and bear fruit in autumn.
Walk slowly, stay on the paths and greet people with a nod. Some families weave carpets and blankets from yak and sheep wool and may sell a piece if you ask. Do not pick fruit from the trees. If you are invited in for butter tea, a short visit and a thank you are the right response.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Do I need a guide for the Lachung village walk?
No. The village is small and easy to explore on foot. Your homestay or hotel can point you to the bridge across the river. A local guide can still add stories and introductions to weaving families, and costs very little if your host arranges it.
When do the apple trees flower and fruit?
Apple and peach blossom usually comes in April. Fruit ripens from late August to October, depending on height and season. Lachung apples are small and sold locally; you may find them at roadside stalls in autumn. Do not pick fruit without permission.
Can I buy handicrafts in Lachung?
A few families weave carpets, blankets and small bags from yak and sheep wool, and some hotels sell local pieces. Choice is limited and prices vary. Ask your host who weaves in the village. Pay in cash, as card machines are rare.
