Bhim Nala and the waterfall drive to Lachung

Between Chungthang and Lachung the road climbs through a narrow, forested valley with falls dropping from the cliffs. Bhim Nala is the largest and most visited, a tall fall near the road where tea stalls cluster in season. Further down the North Sikkim highway, Naga falls near Mangan and the Seven Sisters falls near Gangtok are other common stops.
The falls are fullest after the monsoon, in September and October. In winter they shrink and sometimes freeze at the edges. Keep away from the slippery rocks at the base and do not climb above the road, where loose stones fall.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Where is Bhim Nala falls?
Bhim Nala is on the road between Chungthang and Lachung, roughly an hour before Lachung depending on road condition. Drivers on all package trips know it and stop there. It is right beside the road, so there is no walk needed.
Is the waterfall stop safe?
The viewpoint by the road is safe if you stay on level ground. The rocks near the base are wet and slippery, and the slope above can drop stones, especially in rain. Keep children close and do not stand under the overhang.
Can I stop at other waterfalls on the way?
Yes. Most drivers stop at Seven Sisters falls after leaving Gangtok and Naga falls near Mangan, as well as Bhim Nala. Ask your driver early in the day so you do not arrive in Lachung after dark. Most stops take only 10–15 minutes.
