Sunrise walk to Tiffin Dara

Leave your homestay about 40 minutes before sunrise with a torch and warm layers. The path climbs gently through forest to an open ridge at Tiffin Dara. As the sky lightens, the snow peaks along the northern horizon turn pink, then gold, with Kanchenjunga in the centre.
On the clearest mornings, mainly from October to February, the view runs a long way east and west of Kanchenjunga. Below, the valleys are often filled with cloud. Stay for half an hour after sunrise, when the light softens and birds start calling in the forest behind you.
Ask your host to have tea ready when you return.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How long does the walk to Tiffin Dara take?
From most homestays the walk takes 20–40 minutes uphill on a forest path, about a kilometre. Allow time to stop and catch your breath at 2,600 m. Start about 40 minutes before sunrise so you are at the top for the first light. The walk back down is quicker.
What should I carry for the sunrise walk?
A torch or headlamp, warm layers including a hat and gloves, good shoes with grip and a flask of tea if your host can make one. Temperatures before dawn can be near freezing from November to February. A small camera tripod helps for low-light photos.
What if it is cloudy at sunrise?
Clouds are common, especially from March to May. Ask your host the night before; locals can often tell from the evening sky. If it is cloudy, you can still walk up later in the morning on the chance of a gap, or stay another night and try again.
