Forest trail between Rishop and Lava

Before the road came, villagers walked between Rishop and Lava on a forest path, and it is still used. It drops or climbs about 400 m in roughly 4 km, through moss-covered oak, rhododendron, fir and bamboo. Birds are common, and in April and May the rhododendrons flower red and pink.
Walking downhill from Rishop to Lava takes about 1.5 hours; uphill takes closer to 2. The path is steep in places and slippery after rain. A local guide keeps you on the right track where paths split.
Send luggage by car, carry water and avoid the walk in heavy rain or after dark.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Is the Rishop–Lava trail difficult?
It is moderate. The distance is short, about 4 km, but the path is steep in places and can be muddy, with roots and loose stones. Walking down from Rishop is easier on the lungs but harder on the knees. Most reasonably fit walkers manage it with care.
Do I need a guide for the forest trail?
It is strongly advised. Paths split in the forest, signs are few and cloud can close in quickly. A local guide costs about ₹500–800, indicative, and will also point out birds and plants. Your homestay can usually arrange one, often a family member or neighbour.
Can I walk the trail in the monsoon?
It is not recommended. From June to September the path is very slippery, leeches are common and visibility can drop to a few metres in cloud. Landslips can also damage the trail. If you must, go with a guide, wear leech socks and turn back if the rain is heavy.
