Mountain and night-sky photography

With few lights for many kilometres, Rishop has some of the darkest skies in the Kalimpong hills. On clear, moonless nights from October to February the Milky Way shows plainly, and the snow peaks catch faint starlight.
For mountain shots, the hour after sunrise and the last light of the evening give the best colour on the peaks. A telephoto lens lets you pick out Kanchenjunga and its neighbours, while a wide lens catches the ridges and cloud-filled valleys.
Bring a tripod, spare batteries, which drain fast in the cold, and warm gloves.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
When is the best time for star photography in Rishop?
Clear nights between October and February, close to the new moon, give the darkest skies. Late evening or the hours before dawn are best. Check the weather forecast and ask your host about cloud. Avoid the monsoon months, when the sky is rarely clear.
What camera gear should I bring?
A tripod, a wide lens for stars and landscape, and a telephoto for picking out peaks. Bring spare batteries, since cold drains them quickly, and keep them warm in an inner pocket. A head torch with a red light helps you move around without spoiling your eyes for the dark.
Is it safe to be out at night in Rishop?
Generally yes, but stay close to your homestay and on known paths. The ridge has steep drops, and wild animals live in the forest. Tell your host where you are going, carry a torch and go with a companion. Do not wander into the forest alone after dark.
