Yak ride on the Tsomgo lakeshore

The yaks wear red tassels and bells and are led by herders on foot, so you do not need any riding experience. A standard ride goes a short way along the shore and back, and herders often let you sit on a yak for a photograph without riding at all, for a smaller fee.
Agree the price and the length of the ride before you climb on. Hold the saddle, lean back slightly going downhill and do not stand behind the animals. If you prefer not to ride, the herders are usually happy to talk about their animals for a small tip.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Are the yak rides at Tsomgo safe for children?
Generally yes. The yaks are led on foot by experienced herders along level ground, and children usually ride with an adult nearby. Do not let children walk behind the animals. If your child is nervous, a photograph sitting on a standing yak is a gentler option.
How much does a yak ride cost at Tsomgo Lake?
Expect about ₹300–600 for a short ride along the shore and ₹100–200 for a photograph sitting on a yak. Prices rise in peak season and differ between herders. Agree the price and route clearly before you start, and pay at the end of the ride.
Are the yaks treated well?
The yaks belong to herding families who depend on them, and most are in good condition. If an animal looks unwell or overloaded, choose a different herder. Short rides on level ground are within what yaks are used to carrying. Avoid pushing for longer or faster rides.
