Snow day at a frozen Tsomgo

From January to March Tsomgo is often frozen and surrounded by snow. For many Indian travellers it is their first real snow, and it is reachable in a day from Gangtok.

After a good snowfall the lake turns white and the slopes around it fill with drifts. Families build snowmen near the road and slide on the slopes. The drive itself, through snow-lined bends and the Kyongnosla forest, is part of the day, though drivers may need to fit chains.

Snow also brings closures. The authorities sometimes stop vehicles at a lower point, at 15th Mile or Kyongnosla, until the road is cleared. Keep a spare day in Gangtok, start early and dress in proper waterproof layers. Do not walk on the frozen lake; the ice is not reliably thick.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Is it safe to walk on frozen Tsomgo Lake?

No. The ice is uneven and its thickness is not checked, and people have been warned off it for good reason. Enjoy the snow on the shore and slopes instead. Follow instructions from police and army personnel at the lake, who may close areas after heavy snowfall.

Will the road to Tsomgo be open after snowfall?

Often not immediately. After heavy snow the Border Roads Organisation clears the road, which can take a day or more. Vehicles may be stopped at 15th Mile or Kyongnosla until it is safe. Keep a flexible day in Gangtok and check current status before you travel.

What should I wear for snow at Tsomgo?

Wear thermal underwear, a fleece, a waterproof jacket and trousers, gloves, a warm hat and woollen socks. Waterproof boots can be hired at stalls on the way for about ₹100–200. Sunglasses protect against glare from snow, and lip balm and sunscreen help in the dry, bright air.
