A slow walk along the Tsomgo shore

A path runs along the eastern shore of the lake from the main parking area. The ground is mostly level, but at 3,753 m even an easy walk feels harder than it looks, so set a slow pace and stop often. Look for ducks on the water in spring and autumn and for the lines of prayer flags strung across the slopes.
In winter the path may be snow-covered and slippery, so hired boots help. In May and June flowering shrubs line the slopes. Take a flask of tea, keep the walk to an hour, and head back to the car if you feel a headache or dizziness.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Is the walk around Tsomgo Lake difficult?
The path is mostly level, but the altitude makes it tiring. Walk slowly, rest every few minutes and drink water. Most people cover a few hundred metres to a kilometre along the shore. You do not need to circle the whole lake, and in snow you should stay on the trodden path.
How long can I stay at Tsomgo Lake?
Most trips allow one to two hours at the lake, which is enough at this altitude. Drivers prefer to start back by early afternoon, as weather often closes in and the road can freeze in winter. The permit is for a day visit only and overnight stays are not allowed.
Are there toilets at Tsomgo Lake?
There are basic public toilets near the parking area and at some cafés, usually for a small fee. Facilities are simple and can be crowded in peak season. Carry tissues and hand sanitiser. Plan a stop at a café on the way up too, as options are limited.
