Lhakhang Karpo, the White Temple, stands at the foot of the three peaks of Miri Punsum in the Dumcho area of the valley. It is the seat of Haa's protector deity and the focus of the valley's festivals. A community of monks is attached to it.

Lhakhang Nagpo, the Black Temple, lies a short distance north. Its central image is regarded as especially sacred. Both are modest buildings compared with the dzongs of Paro and Punakha, but they are central to local faith, and your guide can tell the pigeon legend as you walk between them.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Why are they called the White and Black Temples?

According to local tradition, King Songtsen Gampo released a white pigeon and a black pigeon to choose sites for temples, and built one where each landed. The White Temple, Lhakhang Karpo, and the Black Temple, Lhakhang Nagpo, are named after the birds. The story is told locally in Haa.

How far apart are the two temples?

They are a short distance apart in the same part of the valley, a few minutes by car or a short walk. Most visitors see both in a morning. Your guide will arrange entry and explain what can be seen inside, as some rooms may be closed.

Can I photograph inside the temples in Haa?

No. As in all Bhutanese temples, photography is not allowed in the shrine rooms. You may photograph the outside and the surroundings. Dress modestly, remove hats and shoes before entering, and walk clockwise around the buildings and chortens. Ask your guide if you are unsure what is allowed.
