Glenburn Tea Estate

A working Darjeeling tea estate with a small planter's bungalow guesthouse above the Rungeet river, about 1.5–2 hours' drive from Darjeeling town. It is the splurge stay on our list.

Glenburn is a working tea garden whose old bungalows have been turned into a handful of suites. Stays are all-inclusive: meals, guided walks through the tea, factory visits in season and a picnic by the river. The estate sits on a ridge facing Kangchenjunga, well away from Darjeeling traffic.

This is far above our usual prices, and we only suggest it for special trips such as honeymoons or anniversaries. Two nights is the right length. The drive in is slow and partly on estate roads, so arrive in daylight.

Why we book it

  1. Sleep on a working tea estate, not a resort
  2. All meals, walks and tea tastings included
  3. Quiet setting with Kangchenjunga views
  4. A small number of rooms, so it never feels crowded

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

How far is Glenburn from Darjeeling town?

Glenburn lies in the Rangli Rangliot block, roughly 1.5–2 hours' drive from Darjeeling town, with the last part on narrow estate roads. From NJP or Bagdogra allow about 4 hours. The estate normally arranges transfers. It is not a base for daily sightseeing in Darjeeling, so plan your town nights separately and treat Glenburn as a destination in itself.

What does a Glenburn stay include?

Rates are normally all-inclusive: accommodation, all meals, drinks such as estate tea, guided walks through the gardens and, in season, a visit to the tea factory. Some activities like a river picnic depend on weather. Check the current inclusions and minimum stay when you book, because rules and prices can change from season to season.

When is the best time to stay at a Darjeeling tea estate?

March to May is first and second flush, when plucking is active and the factory runs. October and November bring clear skies and autumn tea. Monsoon from June to September is green and quiet but often cloudy, with occasional road disruption. Winter is clear and cold, but tea production usually pauses from December to February.
