Cochrane Place

A small heritage hotel in an old planter's house just below Kurseong on the Pankhabari road, with tea-garden views and well-kept rooms. Good value for a quiet first or last night in the hills.

Cochrane Place is a converted colonial house with an added wing, set among tea gardens below Kurseong. Each room is named and furnished differently, the food is cooked in-house and tea tastings use leaf from neighbouring Darjeeling estates. On clear mornings Kangchenjunga shows above the ridges.

It works well as a soft landing from NJP or Bagdogra, about 1.5–2 hours away, before you go higher to Darjeeling. It is also a good base for Makaibari and Castleton tea estates and the walks around Kurseong. Some rooms are up stairs and steps, so ask for a ground-level room if mobility is a concern.

Why we book it

  1. Character rooms in a real planter-era house
  2. Close to Makaibari and the Kurseong tea walks
  3. Quieter and warmer than Darjeeling, at about 1,450 m
  4. Shorter drive from Siliguri for late arrivals

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

How do I reach Cochrane Place from Siliguri?

The hotel lies on the Pankhabari road below Kurseong, roughly 30 km from Siliguri. A reserved car from NJP or Bagdogra takes about 1.5–2 hours and costs around ₹1,800–2,500. Shared jeeps run to Kurseong town, but the hotel is outside town, so you would still need a local taxi for the last stretch. Ask the hotel to arrange a pickup.

Is Kurseong a good base instead of Darjeeling?

For a quiet stay, yes. Kurseong is lower and warmer, less crowded and close to the tea estates. Darjeeling town is about 32 km and 1.5 hours away, so day trips work, though Tiger Hill sunrise needs a very early start of around 3 am. Many of our travellers split their nights: one in Kurseong, two or three in Darjeeling.

Can I visit tea gardens from Cochrane Place?

Yes. Makaibari and Castleton estates are both within a short drive, and the hotel can suggest guided walks through the gardens and nearby villages. Factory visits depend on the season and the estate's rules, and plucking is busiest from March to November. Check current status before you travel, because estates sometimes close factory visits to the public.
