Aritar village homestays

Aritar's homestays range from rooms in farmhouses among cardamom and vegetable plots to newer purpose-built cottages near the lake. Hosts are mostly Nepali-speaking farming families, and meals use their own produce: rice, local greens, squash, dal, and sometimes gundruk or sel roti.
We use Aritar homestays as the first or last night on a Silk Route trip because the village sits at a comfortable 1,400 m, which helps before the climb to Zuluk. Rooms near the lake are convenient for an evening walk; those higher up give better morning views. Most hosts can also help with the Zuluk permit.
Why we book it
- A gentle first night before the climb to Zuluk
- Home-grown food and friendly farming families
- Walk to Lampokhari lake and Mankhim
- Hosts can help organise the Silk Route permit
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Is Aritar a good first stop on the Silk Route?
Yes. At about 1,400 m, Aritar gives your body a gentle night before Zuluk at about 3,000 m and the high road above it. It is roughly 105 km from Siliguri, so you arrive in good time. Next morning the drive to Zuluk via Rongli takes about 2.5–3 hours.
Do Aritar homestays have attached bathrooms?
Most newer homestays have attached bathrooms with geysers, while older farmhouse rooms sometimes share one. Power cuts happen in the monsoon. If an attached bathroom matters to you, ask the host directly when booking, and request a photo of the room if you are unsure.
Can I walk around Aritar from my homestay?
Yes. Lampokhari lake has a level path around it, and the walk up to Mankhim viewpoint takes about 30–45 minutes from the lake. Village lanes lead through cardamom and vegetable plots. Paths are steep in places and slippery in rain, so wear shoes with good grip.
