A short Dooars break from Siliguri: one night in the tea hills at Samsing and one at Lataguri for a Gorumara watchtower safari. Little driving, low cost and easy to fit into a weekend.
This is the shortest trip that still gives you both sides of the Dooars: a cool night in the tea gardens on the hill edge, and a night by the forest with a dawn watchtower safari. Total driving is about 200 km over three days, never more than three hours at a stretch.
It works best between October and May. The Gorumara safari is not possible from 16 June to 15 September, when the park is closed; in those months you could spend both nights at Samsing instead.

Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Can I do this trip by public transport?
Yes, at the Budget tier. Take a bus from Siliguri to Chalsa or Malbazar and a shared jeep to Samsing; next day take a shared jeep down and an auto to Lataguri; then a bus from Malbazar back to Siliguri. It is cheap, but jeeps are irregular, so start early each day and keep plans flexible.
What if the Gorumara safari is sold out?
We try to book as soon as online slots open. If the watchtower you want is full, we look for another tower or slot at the Lataguri counter. If nothing is available, you can still walk on the Murti riverbed, visit the Jalpesh temple or take a Chapramari watchtower trip if open. Check current status before you travel.
Is this trip suitable for families?
Yes. Drives are short, the walks are easy and the Medla watchtower trip with its bullock cart is popular with children. Keep children close on the riverbed and at Rocky Island, where water can be fast. Families often choose the Comfort tier for the pool at Chalsa.
Can I start from Bagdogra airport?
Yes. Bagdogra is about 15 km from Siliguri, and the drive to Samsing takes about 3 hours. Choose a flight landing before 11 am so you reach Samsing in daylight. On the last day aim for a flight after 3 pm.
Can I do this trip in the monsoon?
Not as written. Gorumara is closed from 16 June to 15 September. You could spend two nights at Samsing and Suntalekhola instead, for tea gardens and rain, but expect leeches, slippery paths and the odd blocked road. Check current status before you travel.
How much walking is involved?
Light walking only: an hour or two in the tea gardens, a short walk to the bridge at Suntalekhola, some scrambling at Rocky Island if you wish and a few flights of stairs at the watchtower. Comfortable shoes are enough.
What should I pack?
A warm layer for the evening in Samsing and the dawn safari, dull-coloured clothes for the watchtower, comfortable shoes, binoculars, a torch, insect repellent and some cash. ATMs are available in Malbazar and Chalsa but not in Samsing.
Is the price per person?
Yes, prices are per person for two people sharing a room, and are indicative for the 2025–26 season. Peak dates such as the Durga Puja holidays, Christmas and New Year cost more. Single travellers pay a supplement for a single room and an unshared car.
Can I add Jaldapara to this trip?
Yes. Add one or two nights at Madarihat after Lataguri, which is about 75 km and 2 hours further east, for a Jaldapara jeep safari. That turns it into our four-night rhino trail. Return to Siliguri takes 3–3.5 hours from Madarihat.
