Day walk to Maenam Hill

The trail climbs about 1,100 m through oak, magnolia and rhododendron forest, along an old pilgrim route. Most walkers take 4–5 hours up and 3 hours down. The sanctuary protects red panda, barking deer and many birds, though sightings of mammals are rare. Near the top a small shrine marks the summit.
On a clear day the summit looks across to Kangchenjunga, down to the Teesta and Rangeet valleys, and south towards the plains. Go with a local guide, start early and turn around by early afternoon if cloud or rain come in.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Do I need a guide for the Maenam walk
A local guide is strongly advised. The trail branches in places, cloud can close in quickly, and the forest is large and empty. Your hotel in Ravangla can find one for about ₹1,500–2,500 per group. Forest department rules for the sanctuary can change, so check current status before you travel and carry ID.
How fit do I need to be for Maenam
You should be comfortable walking 7–8 hours on steep, uneven forest paths, gaining and losing about 1,100 m. It is not technical, but it is long. Carry water, lunch, a rain jacket and a warm layer. Start by 7 am. If that sounds too much, walk the first hour into the forest and turn back.
What wildlife lives in Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary
The sanctuary protects red panda, Himalayan black bear, barking deer, serow and many birds, including pheasants, laughing thrushes and sunbirds. Mammals are shy and seldom seen on a day walk. Birds are easier to spot in the early morning in spring. Keep quiet, stay on the trail and do not feed any animal.
