Snow on the Nathu La road in spring

Snow lingers around Nathu La well into spring. In March and April the road is often cut through banks of snow taller than the cars, and the slopes around the pass are good for a snowball fight or photographs. Clear mornings are common before cloud builds after midday.
Because weather is still unsettled, keep a spare day in Gangtok and leave early. Hire boots on the way if you do not have waterproof footwear. In May the snow line retreats and the slopes begin to turn green, though the pass itself often keeps some snow into June.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Is there snow at Nathu La in May?
Often yes, though less than in March and April. In most years snow lies around the pass and on the higher slopes in May, while the road itself is clear. Fresh snowfall is possible in any month at 4,310 m. For deep snow with a good chance of an open road, aim for March or April.
What happens if Nathu La is closed on my permit day?
If the pass is closed because of snow or for security reasons, vehicles usually go only as far as Tsomgo and Baba Mandir if those are open. Agents may refund part of the difference. This is why we suggest a spare day in Gangtok. Check current status before you travel.
Do cars need snow chains for Nathu La?
In heavy snow, drivers fit chains, and the authorities may allow only vehicles with chains or four-wheel drive. Local drivers handle this; you do not need to arrange it. Fares may be higher on snow days to cover the extra wear and the slower drive.
