At the border fence on Nathu La

Climb the steps from the parking area to the viewing area at the fence, where Indian and Chinese posts face each other across the pass. Soldiers explain the history and the rules.

From the parking area, a flight of steps leads up to the viewing area. At 4,310 m this climb is harder than it looks, so stop often. At the top, the fence marks the border, with Chinese buildings visible a short distance away. Soldiers on duty sometimes talk to visitors about the pass and its history.

There are strict limits on where you can stand and what you can photograph, and they change from time to time. Follow instructions immediately. Most visitors spend about an hour at the pass before the cold and altitude make them ready to head down to Baba Mandir and Tsomgo.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

How many steps are there to the Nathu La viewing area?

The climb from the parking area involves a few hundred steps and takes 10–20 minutes at an easy pace. That sounds simple, but at 4,310 m it can be exhausting. Rest every few flights and do not race. Those who cannot manage the steps can wait at the lower area.

Can I talk to soldiers at Nathu La?

Soldiers often greet visitors and may answer questions about the pass, but they are on duty. Be polite, keep it brief, and do not photograph them without permission. Do not ask about troop numbers or positions. Many visitors thank them for their service, which is usually well received.

Is there mobile signal at Nathu La?

Signal at the pass is weak or absent on most networks, and you should not rely on your phone for navigation or calls. Let people know you will be out of contact for most of the day. Signal usually returns near Tsomgo and is good again closer to Gangtok.
