Jatraprasad watchtower safari

The jeep leaves from Lataguri with a forest guide, drives a short way through sal forest and stops at the tower. You climb up and wait. Below is an open grassland with a salt lick and a water body, and the Murti river and forest beyond. Gaur and peafowl come often, rhinos and elephants regularly but not every day.
This is a slow, quiet trip. Talk in whispers, switch phones to silent and bring binoculars. The dawn slot is cooler and usually better for animals; the late afternoon slot has warm light for photographs.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
What will I see from Jatraprasad watchtower?
Gaur, sambar, barking deer and peafowl are seen on most trips. Indian rhinos and wild elephants visit the salt lick regularly but not on every slot. Hornbills, kingfishers and other birds are common in the trees around the tower. Bring binoculars, as animals may stay at the far edge of the grassland.
How do I book Jatraprasad?
Book through the forest department's official online booking when it is open, or at the Lataguri counter for remaining slots. Jatraprasad is the most popular tower and fills first in peak season, so book it before the others. Guests at WBFDC lodges may be able to book at reception.
Is Jatraprasad suitable for elderly visitors?
Mostly. The jeep ride is short and the tower has stairs of a couple of storeys. People with knee problems can manage slowly. There are no toilets on the tower, so use facilities at Lataguri before you leave. Carry water and a light jacket for dawn slots.
