Half day at the Jalpesh temple near Mainaguri

Jalpesh lies about 25 km from Lataguri, 7–8 km from Mainaguri. The temple, with its large white dome, was founded by the Koch ruler Bishwa Singha in 1524 and rebuilt by King Pran Narayan of Cooch Behar in 1663. Inside, Shiva is worshipped as Jalpesh in the form of a lingam.
On ordinary days the temple is calm, with village families making offerings and stalls selling flowers and sweets. At Maha Shivaratri and through the month of Shravan it draws huge crowds and a large fair. Remove shoes, dress modestly and follow the queue. Photography inside the sanctum is usually not allowed.
