A night at the Mendabari forest lodge

Mendabari Jungle Lodge is a small, plain lodge of the West Bengal Forest Development Corporation in the forest between Jaldapara and Chilapata. Once the day visitors leave, the only sounds are insects, owls, barking deer and sometimes elephants breaking branches nearby.
There is little to do after dinner except sit on the verandah, so bring a torch, a book and warm clothes in winter. At first light, hornbills, barbets and woodpeckers are loud around the lodge. It is one of the best ways to feel the Dooars forest rather than just pass through it.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Is there electricity at Mendabari?
Usually yes, but power cuts happen and backup may be limited. Charge devices when you can and carry a power bank and torch. Mobile signal is weak inside the forest. Tell family or friends you may be out of contact for the night.
Can I walk in the forest from Mendabari?
No. Do not leave the lodge compound on foot without forest staff. Elephants, gaur and leopards move close to the lodge, especially at dawn and dusk. Enjoy the forest from the verandah and on guided safaris.
What food is served at Mendabari?
Simple fixed meals of rice, dal, vegetables, and chicken or egg curry, cooked by the lodge staff. Tell them about dietary needs when you book or arrive. There are no shops nearby, so carry snacks and water from Hasimara or Madarihat.
