Ridge walk to Lepchakha

From Buxa village the path continues uphill through forest and small fields to Lepchakha, a village of Drukpa families on a ridge facing south. The last part opens up on to grassy ground where on a clear day you can see the rivers of the Dooars spreading over the plains below.
The village has a small Buddhist shrine and a few homestays. Ask before entering homes or the shrine and keep your voice low. Sunrise and sunset from Lepchakha are worth an overnight stay if homestays are open.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How far is Lepchakha from Buxa Fort?
About 5 km, a walk of 1.5–2 hours each way with some steep sections. From Santalabari to Lepchakha the total is about 9–10 km. Many people walk to the fort on day one, stay the night and go to Lepchakha the next morning.
Who lives in Lepchakha?
Lepchakha is a small Drukpa village, people with close ties to Bhutan, who are mostly Buddhist. Families farm, keep animals and run a few homestays. Treat the shrine and homes with respect, and ask before photographing people.
Can I stay overnight at Lepchakha?
A few family homestays have hosted walkers, but rules on homestays inside Buxa Tiger Reserve have changed in recent years. Ask your guide at Santalabari what is open, and carry a sleeping layer in case you end up in a very simple room. Check current status before you travel.
