Eagle's Crag viewpoint and the toy train in the bazaar

Kurseong station is the headquarters of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, and a small railway museum sits nearby. Just outside, the line runs down the middle of the Hill Cart Road through the market. When a train comes, vendors pull back their stalls and pedestrians step aside as the engine passes.
From the station a short, steep climb leads to Eagle's Crag, a viewpoint with a small park. On clear days you see the plains, rivers and the Siliguri lights at night, and Kangchenjunga to the north. Go early for mountain views, or at dusk for the plains. Bring a jacket for the wind.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
When does the toy train pass through Kurseong bazaar?
The daily NJP–Darjeeling train passes Kurseong in the late morning or around midday on the way up and in the afternoon on the way down. Seasonal steam runs add more. Times change, so check the IRCTC timetable or ask at the station. The best viewing spots are along the main road just uphill of the station.
How hard is the climb to Eagle's Crag?
It is a short but steep climb of about 15–20 minutes from the station, on steps and a narrow road. Most people manage it at an easy pace. Wear shoes with grip, as the steps can be slippery in the wet. There is a small park with benches at the top, and a car can reach close by if needed.
Is there a railway museum in Kurseong?
Yes. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway has a small museum near Kurseong station with photographs, old equipment and documents. Opening hours vary and it may close on some days, so ask at the station. There is also a larger museum at Ghum station, included in the joy ride. Check current status before you travel.
