Dow Hill rises above Kurseong and is covered in tall, dark cryptomeria planted in colonial times. The road winds past Victoria Boys' School and Dow Hill School, both founded in the 19th century, and the Deer Park, now Dowhill Park. A small forest museum near the forest school shows local wildlife and trees.

The forest is often misty, which helps explain the ghost stories Kurseong tells about it. In daylight it is simply a beautiful, quiet walk. Start from town and loop back via Chimney, an old meadow with a lone brick chimney, if you have the energy. Wear good shoes; the roads are steep.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Is Dow Hill really haunted?

Kurseong has many ghost stories about Dow Hill, especially about the forest road and the old schools, and they are part of local lore. There is no evidence behind them. The forest is a safe and quiet place to walk in daylight. Its reputation comes from mist, tall dark trees and long empty roads more than anything else.

How do I reach Dow Hill from Kurseong?

Dow Hill Road starts near the town centre and climbs about 3 km to the schools and forest. You can walk it in about an hour uphill or take a local taxi for about ₹200–400. Many walkers ride up and walk down. The forest roads continue towards Chimney and back to Hill Cart Road for a longer loop.

Can I visit the schools on Dow Hill?

The schools are working boarding schools, and their grounds are private. You can see the buildings from the road, but do not enter or photograph students without permission. Some schools allow visits for former students or by prior arrangement only. The forest, roads, park and forest museum are open to everyone.
