Buddha Dordenma on Kuensel Phodrang ridge

The Buddha Dordenma is a seated Shakyamuni Buddha in gilded bronze, about 51 m tall, completed in 2015 on Kuensel Phodrang ridge about 6 km by road from the city centre. Inside, a meditation hall holds many thousands of smaller Buddha images. The statue was built to mark the centenary of the monarchy and is seen from much of the valley.
Visit late in the afternoon when the sun lights the gold and the city spreads below. The paved terrace is wide and easy for older visitors. Walking trails through the surrounding Kuensel Phodrang nature park lead back towards town if you want a gentle hour on foot.
