Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Why does the Gurudongmar trip start at 4 am?
The wind at the lake rises through the morning and clouds often build by midday. Army rules also limit tourist hours on the road. An early start gets you to the lake in calm, clear conditions and back to Lachen by late morning.
Can I visit Gurudongmar from Lachung directly?
No. You need to sleep in Lachen first, as the drive from Lachung would take too long and skip the night that helps with altitude. On a 3-night circuit, operators send you to Lachen first, then on to Lachung. Plan your circuit so the Lachen night comes right before the lake.
Is the road to Gurudongmar dangerous?
It is rough in parts but driven daily by experienced local drivers. The bigger risk is altitude, not the road. Snow and ice close it in winter, and landslides in the monsoon. Your driver and the army decide whether to go each day.
What does the Gurudongmar trip cost?
It is normally included in Lachen packages. If added separately, expect about ₹4,000–6,000 per vehicle, indicative. There is no fee at the lake itself for Indian visitors with a valid permit. Operators rarely sell it on its own, so book it as part of a Lachen package from Gangtok.
