Your options

Ways to make the trip

Shared jeep
2.5–3 hours

₹120–180 a seat · One or two shared jeeps a day run between the Kalimpong motor stand and Lolegaon, usually leaving Kalimpong in the afternoon and Lolegaon early in the morning. Times change, so ask at the stand a day ahead.

Reserved car
2–2.5 hours

₹2,500–3,200 per car · A reserved car from Kalimpong can be combined with Lava the same day: Kalimpong to Lava, then about 24 km on to Lolegaon. Expect a slightly higher fare for that circuit.

Worth a stop

  1. Algarah bazaar
  2. Kafer viewpoint
  3. Forest stretches of oak and cryptomeria
If you are going on to Lava and Rishop, visit Lolegaon first and move up, so you end with the high sunrise view at Rishop.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

How far is Lolegaon from Kalimpong?

By the usual road via Algarah it is about 55 km and takes 2–2.5 hours. Drivers sometimes mention a shorter road via Relli, but it is narrower and in poorer condition. Lolegaon sits at about 1,675 m, a little higher than Kalimpong, on a ridge facing the Kanchenjunga range.

Is there public transport to Lolegaon?

Only a little. One or two shared jeeps a day link Lolegaon with Kalimpong, at about ₹120–180 a seat, indicative. They mainly serve villagers, so times change. For travellers with luggage or a tight schedule, a reserved car is far easier. Your homestay can usually help arrange one.

How far is Lolegaon from Lava?

About 24 km, roughly an hour by car on a forest road. Many travellers combine the two: a night in Lolegaon for the canopy walk and Jhandi Dara, then on to Lava for the monastery and Neora Valley. A reserved car for the transfer costs about ₹1,500–2,200, indicative.

Is the road to Lolegaon open in the monsoon?

It usually stays open, but slides and fallen trees are common between June and September, and the surface gets slippery. Travel in daylight and keep a spare day. If NH10 is closed, coming up via Gorubathan and Lava can be easier than going through Kalimpong. Check current status before you travel.
