Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Do I need a tour operator for Dzongu?
Not necessarily. Unlike Lachung and Lachen, you can reach Dzongu by public shared jeep and local car. You still need a Dzongu permit, which homestays usually arrange. Foreigners need a registered agent for their Protected Area Permit. Your homestay host is usually the simplest contact for the Dzongu paperwork.
Which bridge do I use to enter Dzongu?
Entry is across the Teesta near Mangan. The October 2023 flood damaged crossings in this area, and some routes changed while repairs went on. Ask your host which crossing is currently in use. Check current status before you travel. Your driver or host will know the current route.
Can I combine Dzongu with Lachung or Lachen?
Yes. Dzongu is close to Mangan on the main North Sikkim road. You can spend two nights in Dzongu and then join a Lachung or Lachen trip, though the permit and vehicle for the high valleys must still come through a registered operator in Gangtok.
Is the Gangtok to Mangan road good?
It is a paved mountain road for most of the way, with landslide-prone stretches in the monsoon. Shared jeeps run all year except during major closures. The drive takes about 3 hours to Mangan. Expect slow sections where road widening or landslide repairs are under way.
