Gaeboo Achyuk birthday at Damsang Fort
20 December each year

Gaeboo Achyuk, also written Gyalpo Ajok, ruled the Lepcha kingdom of Damsang in the late seventeenth century. Local tradition says he built the fort at Damsang to hold off the Bhutanese, who later captured and executed him. After that the Kalimpong area came under Bhutanese rule until the British annexed it in 1865.
Each year on 20 December Lepcha associations hold a gathering at the fort ruins between Pedong and Algarah. There are prayers led by Lepcha priests, speeches on Lepcha history and language, songs and dances in traditional dress. It is one of the few times the Lepcha story of these hills is told in public, on the ground where it happened.
This is a community observance, not a tourist festival. Visitors who come quietly are welcome, but there are few facilities, and the road to the fort is rough. Sillery Gaon, a short drive away, is the most comfortable base.
How to do it well
- Stay in Sillery Gaon or Pedong the night before
- Dress warmly; late December mornings are cold on the ridge
- Ask before photographing rituals and elders
- Carry water and snacks, since stalls are few
- Confirm the programme with your homestay host, as arrangements vary
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Who was Gaeboo Achyuk?
Gaeboo Achyuk, also written Gyalpo Ajok, was a Lepcha chieftain who ruled from Damsang in the late seventeenth century. Allied with Tibet, he fought Bhutan for control of these hills. Accounts say the Bhutanese captured and executed him, after which the Kalimpong area came under Bhutan until 1865. Lepchas remember him as their last king here.
Where is Damsang Fort?
The ruins lie on a ridge between Pedong and Algarah in Kalimpong district, roughly 6 km from Icche Gaon and a short drive from Sillery Gaon. Only parts of the stone walls survive among the trees. The last stretch is a rough road and a short walk, so wear sturdy shoes.
Can tourists attend the 20 December gathering?
Yes, quiet and respectful visitors are generally welcome. It is a Lepcha community event, so follow the lead of organisers, stay out of the way of rituals and ask before taking photographs. There are no tickets. Your homestay host in Sillery Gaon or Pedong can tell you the timing for the year.
Is late December a good time to visit Sillery Gaon?
Yes, December is usually clear, with good views of Kanchenjunga from Sillery Gaon and Ramitey Dara. Nights drop to a few degrees above freezing, so bring warm layers. Christmas and New Year week is busy with weekenders, so book homestays early if your trip runs past 20 December.
