Rhododendron season walk in Yumthang

The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary protects the slopes around Yumthang, where many species of rhododendron grow between roughly 3,000 and 4,000 m. They flower in turns from mid-April, so colours change through the season. Lower down you pass tree rhododendrons; higher, the shrubs grow short and dense.
Ask your driver to stop on the road before the valley for photos, then walk along the river on the valley floor. Stay on trodden ground, do not pick blooms and leave no litter. Early morning gives the clearest light and the fewest jeeps.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
When do the Yumthang rhododendrons flower?
Flowering usually starts in mid-April and peaks in early to mid-May, with some species blooming into June. Timing varies with the winter and altitude, so call a Lachung hotel or your operator a week before to ask how far the season has come.
Is walking allowed in the sanctuary?
Yes, on the valley floor and along the road. Keep to paths, do not damage plants and do not light fires. Longer treks inside the sanctuary need separate permission and a local guide, and are rarely possible on a standard package.
Is the valley crowded in May?
Yes, during school holidays dozens of jeeps arrive between 8 and 11 am. Leaving Lachung by 6 am gives you a quieter hour. Walking a few hundred metres away from the parking area also helps. Weekdays are slightly calmer than weekends.
